Multiplication and division are inverse operations. If 3 × 4 = 12, then 12 ÷ 4 = 3.
A school has 56 books and wants to arrange them equally on 7 shelves. How many books will be on each shelf?
To find how many books go on each shelf, we divide 56 books by 7 shelves: 56 ÷ 7 = 8 books per shelf.
What do you get when you divide 81 by 9?
Dividing 81 by 9 tells you that 9 goes into 81 nine times.
To find how many times a number fits into another, we use addition.
To find how many times a smaller number fits into a larger one, we actually use division, not addition, to get our answer.
